Assistant Professor

 After qualifying the UGC NET examination, one of the best career options is the position of Assistant Professor in universities and colleges. An assistant professor is an entry-level faculty position at a college or university. It is a Full-time teaching and research position.  As an assistant professor, you will work to establish yourself a scholar  through teaching,  research, conference presentations, and publications. 
 You will be required to teach both undergraduate and postgraduate students. You are also required    to serve on academic committees and perform other service roles. It's a demanding career that expects you not only to teach but also to pursue research to advance human knowledge. The salary and perks in government institutions or government aided institutions is quite high.  

Eligibility Criteria:

In order to become an Assistant Professor, candidates must pursue a master’s degree across any discipline of their choice with a minimum aggregate score of 55% (50% for reserved categories).  or above from a recognized college or university. For JRF, candidates should be below 30 years of age (relaxations apply for reserved categories and certain categories of candidates). There is no upper age limit for assistant professor.

UGC NET- JRF Scheme 

If you qualify for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), you will receive fellowship to pursue research in top ranked universities /institutions  that will lead to the award of Ph. D degree. 

The scheme is designed to promote research and academic excellence by providing financial support to candidates who wish to pursue Ph. D or advanced research in Indian universities and colleges.

Eligibility for UGC JRF

A candidate must:

  • Qualify the UGC–NET examination

  • Secure a rank within the JRF cutoff (top category among NET-qualified candidates)

  • Hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) with required minimum marks

  • Be below the age limit (generally 30 years, with relaxation for reserved categories)


Benefits of the UGC JRF Scheme

Under the scheme, selected candidates receive:

  • ₹37,000 per month for the first 2 years (Junior Research Fellow)

  • ₹42,000 per month after upgradation to Senior Research Fellow (SRF)

  • House Rent Allowance (HRA) or hostel accommodation

  • Contingency grant for books, stationery, and research expenses

The fellowship is normally awarded for 5 years (2 years as JRF + 3 years as SRF), subject to satisfactory progress.

Exam Pattern:

The UGC- NET exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency for the recruitment of Assistant Professors and to award the Junior Research Fellowship.  The exam is conducted twice a year (in June and December) and is conducted in CBT (computer based) mode. It is conducted in a number of subjects, mainly in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, and Commerce streams. Candidates must choose the subject relevant to their academic background and interests.

The exam consists of two papers: both papers are objective-type questions (Multiple Choice Questions). The exam is held in online mode (Computer-based Test). The first paper is General paper on ‘Teaching and Research Aptitude’. This paper is common for all candidates and tests general knowledge, reasoning, comprehension, and research methodology. This paper consists of 50 questions, each worth 2 marks.

The second paper is subject-specific paper (based on the candidate’s selected subject). This paper tests deep knowledge of the subject at the postgraduate level. It consists of 100 questions, each worth 2 marks.

To start the preparation for the UGC NET exam, first of all you must go through the prescribed syllabus followed by a thorough examination of previous years’ question papers. The key to understanding any examination is its syllabus. Get it printed and observe what subjects are there, what topics you need to cover.  Examining previous years’ question papers will help you to understand the trends and thrust areas. Preparation for this exam requires a well-planned and structured study approach. Understand your strengths and weaknesses. Mark those subjects that you are best at and start covering it. When you start with what you have confidence in, it boosts you up. Here are some tips that can help you prepare for the UGC NET exam:

Understand the syllabus: The first step in preparing for the UGC NET exam is to understand the syllabus and exam pattern. Go through the syllabus thoroughly and make a study plan accordingly.
